[Principals' Conference] Panel Discussion: Education Beyond the Classroom

NextGen Arena

Overview

[Principals' Conference - by Invitation Only] In Hong Kong, education largely takes place within classroom walls. While experiential learning is recognised for its benefits, it remains underused. Even with initiatives like Other Learning Experiences (OLE) in secondary schools in Hong Kong, such approaches account for only 10–15% of total learning hours.

Research shows that students—especially those from grassroots backgrounds—benefit greatly from learning beyond the classroom, gaining improvements in motivation, competency, and holistic development. Nature-specific outdoor learning in particular has measurable socio-emotional, academic and well-being benefits. These experiences not only boost academic outcomes but nurture well-rounded individuals equipped for real-world challenges. Yet, structural constraints and traditional mindsets continue to limit access to these impactful experiences.

In this panel, Education Beyond the Classroom, school principals are invited to rethink how learning is designed. Ms Chung Man Chan, Founder of Poly Studio and Consultant for THINK Global School, will share how global, immersive models transform student engagement. Andy Van Riet, Head of Operations at Wild China, will highlight nature- and culture-based experiential journeys. Ms Tina Chan, School Supervisor of Taikoo Primary School, brings a local lens on integrating such practices into mainstream education. Moderated by Yerica Park, Strategy and Operations Manager at G-school, this panel offers practical insights to help school leaders move beyond inertia, and towards learning that is dynamic, inclusive, and future-ready.
