Exploring Strategies to Foster Interdisciplinary Co-creation and Collaborative Learning in Digital Education in the Era of AI

Pedagogy & Curriculum Theatre (Curated by EdCity)

Overview

In the 2023/24 academic year, Buddhist Sum Heung Lam Memorial College became the first school in Hong Kong to launch a pioneering generative AI school-based curriculum and a dedicated generative AI television channel. This bold initiative reflects the school’s proactive response to the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies and its commitment to driving innovation in education.
Under the theme of “Co-creation and Co-learning”, the school has developed a systematic framework that integrates technology, language education, and humanities. The curriculum encourages cross-disciplinary learning and aims to equip students with the essential skills to thrive in an AI-driven future.
This academic year, the programme has expanded to include a new Form 3 module entitled “I Am a Digital Creator”. Jointly developed by the Chinese and English Departments, the module blends generative AI tools with emerging media technologies. Students engage in a comprehensive creative process—from designing ten-panel comics to producing full-length animations. They also learn scriptwriting, voice acting, video editing, and even experiment with AI-generated music composition. The creative themes span a rich spectrum of Chinese heritage, local fishing culture, and intangible cultural heritage, enabling students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of traditional and local identities through digital expression.
At the Form 2 level, the module “If I Lived in an AI Parallel Universe” introduces students to prompt engineering and image generation, paired with imaginative writing tasks. Through these personalised creations, students explore emotional expression and speculative storytelling. The curriculum further prompts critical reflection on AI’s role in cultural preservation, creative ethics, and social values—nurturing discernment and positive attitudes towards technology.
The overarching design of the programme emphasises a shift from technological comprehension to creative application. By adopting inquiry-based and project-based learning approaches, the school aims to cultivate students’ problem-solving abilities, digital literacy, and interdisciplinary competencies—laying a solid foundation for learning and living in the age of artificial intelligence.
